Ivan Lutoshin, a neurologist by profession and a loser in life. He finds out that he has an inoperable brain tumor and he has six months left to live. He decides to commit suicide by throwing himself under a car, but the car manages to pull out of the road. The driver turn to be a policeman, when he gets to know Lutoshin's problem he offers him to take part in a police operations catching extremely dangerous bandits - if they kill him at least it's a good reason to die. After some time, Lutoshin learns that the tumor growth has slowed down. He makes a curious conclusion: the tumor stops growing as soon as there is a real threat to life associated with helping people in trouble.
