Episodes
Food-fascinated journalist Stefan Gates starts his examination of the elusive E-numbers with the 100-series, containing coloring food-additives. They illustrate that regulating with standardized EU-norms reduces risks, which are more complicated then say natural versus artificial. experiments show how extraordinary the psychological impact of color is, well beyond our awareness.
Stefan concentrates on the 38 preservatives among the E-numbers, one or more of which used in most foods given the extreme modern demands of 'freshness'. First an experiment with pork, well half pigs, shows the impressive effect of table salt. Then he elaborates on how and why others chemical salts are used, although some are very toxic unless carefully dosed, and the need for them, recalling the historical nightmare scurvy.
We'll have the synopsis for you soon.
Stefan Gates explores what those e-numbers on food packaging mean and comes to some surprising conclusions about what they are made of and what they do.
