Santa Barbara, California, July 2004; A Ph.D. student in Chemistry, 27-year-old Jarrod B. Davidson, was found badly wounded on the doorstep of his apartment from a high-powered rifle shot. He died on the way to the hospital. Law enforcement detectives pieced together a grisly family plot based on a single genetic marker. The lead investigator was Detective Greg Sorenson of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office. The case was solved through DNA and other forensics. In the end, the perpetrators were Jarrod's ex-wife Kelee Davidson and her parents, Philip Jones and Mindy Jones. All three were convicted and sentenced for the murder. Both Phil and Mindy Jones were sentenced to life in prison. Kelee Davidson was sentenced as an accessory and received 4 years in prison. The actual shooter was Kelee's father, Phil Jones. This murder came about because Jarrod and his ex-wife Kelee were in a custody battle over their 4-year-old daughter -- who is now age 22 and was raised by Jarrod's parents.
Agawam, Massachusetts; on Easter Sunday, April 15, 1992, Massachusetts, police find the remains of a 24-year-old woman, Lisa Ziegert. She had been an employee of a local greeting card shop; she had been kidnapped. Law enforcement detectives worked the case for years but were not able to solve the case until the advancement of forensic science regarding such evidence as DNA left at the crime scene. Twenty-five years later, the case was finally solved. DNA technology had advanced to the state that enabled the detectives to find the killer -- who turned out to be Gary Schara. Schara confessed to the crime in a hand-written letter to his girlfriend after he found out that a police warrant had been issued for the purposes of collecting his DNA. In the end, Schara pleaded guilty in 2019 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Determined investigators must piece together a crime scene to reconstruct the timeline, unlock the motive and ultimately get closer to the killer.
