The captain of the special police department Shiryaev investigates a chain of bloody murders. By a lucky chance, he meets the Doctor of Mathematical Sciences, the extravagant Professor Stoppel.
With the help of formulas and calculations, Stoppel helps the police to get on the trail of a homicidal maniac. The scientist is appointed a consultant to the police.
A famous psychic is found dead in his office. During the investigation, Stoppel and Shiryaev get acquainted with the 17-year-old client of the psychic Katya Romanovskaya.
