Former Detective Superintendant Ryder takes a job protecting American Peter Kovacs for 3 weeks. Kovacs claims he escaped the Prague Spring where he acted has the Czechs banker. Now he is back in Europe for the first time and very scared.
Former singer turned night club owner Julian King is under pressure to pay for protection. He asks Ryder talk to gangster Walter Flack. Flack agrees to back off but Ryder fears word may get out to a greater danger in Oscar Patterson.
Sir Dennis Kater contacts John Ryder to help find his stolen Van Dough painting, valued at £250,000. Ryder will get a 10% reward if he recovers it. He contacts Jock Macauley from the Art Squad but he believes it's now out of the country.
Paul Fermont denies he has the Van Dough painting however Ryder knows that he is estranged from his daughter Suzanne since she vanished with Charles Keeping. If Ryder gets his daughter Suzanne to return Fermont will give him the painting.
Secretary Polly Gregg is employed by Stephen Draycott, who believes sex is included. Next day Polly reports him for rape. Draycott refuses to cooperate and has destroyed his clothes. Kathy forces Ryder to change opinion and help Polly.
Denis Quilley is John Ryder a former senior police officer who resigned from the force under a cloud due to conflict with his senior officer. Setting up as a consultant operating out of Kathy's nightclub whose owner is also his lover Ryder takes on cases from protecting visiting businessmen to retrieving stolen paintings whilst remaining within the boundaries of the law. Always in need of money due to his divorce Ryder finds himself on the receiving end of some violent assaults in the course of his endeavours. A truly excellent and entertaining thriller series with supporting cast of well known uk actors and Quilley excelling in his role as principled but resourceful consultant. This would have been an excellent long term series and probably better named Ryder but alas we only got 6 superb episodes. Very much worth seeking out for fans of mystery thriller genre.
