1994. To pay off their rent debt, childhood friends Vasya and Pasha have to work as musicians in a restaurant. Jenya, a student about to be expelled, chases her vocal coach Ptitsyn and discovers his "terrible" secret. Street musician Bob doesn't have a penny but orders a big expensive dinner at a restaurant that belongs to crime boss nicknamed the Doctor.
Vasya and Pasha decide to make a demo tape and it leads to unexpected consequences. Jenya wants to improve her exam results and to that end she uses the carrot and stick approach on Ptitsyn. Bob is gradually getting used to the Bombay but he gets into conflict with one of the Doctor's goons.
Rent debt forces Vasya to take extreme measures - to ask money from his parents. Jenya nearly gets all her exams done but she suddenly discovers that gym class is very important for an arts major. Bob's last pants get torn, and it becomes a huge problem - for Vityok.
Jenya wakes up in the Doctor's "work" apartment and he lets her stay there for a while. Vasya is worried about Jenya. Ptitsyn's awkward and practically hopeless flirting with waitress Natasha suddenly provokes a passionate response from her.
Jenya moves in with Vasya and Pasha. Vasya decides to ask her out to a movie, despite having no money. Ptitsyn promises his wife to get another job in order to give up drinking - he is going to work for her brother Valera, to whom he owes money. Bob finds an unexpected approach to dealing with Vityok.
1994 Three young men, one senior voice coach and a soloist girl make a music band to earn for living at the Bombay Restaurant. Someone would call those years 'brave new times', someone would call them chaos and someone would say it was a time of changes, but for creative people it was a time of new opportunities.
