Park ranger Jonas Waldek is elated when he finally spots a wolf in his national park, Sächsische Schweiz, which lacks rare species. He saves a clueless mountaineer whose rope breaks after her partner and she failed to get proper info on feasible routes, which Jonas deals with diplomatically. He accidentally finds his late brother Frank's watch, which proves a critical clue as he also learns local businessman Karl Nollau is about to get permission to re-open the old mine in the reserve, and has a blackmail weapon to break Jonas's opposition: the Waldek family lumber business is on land leased from Nollau, and Frank lost the contract during his fatal accident. Academic biologist Emilia Graf is researching the wandering wolf and sparks fly, until she hears he's about to cave in to the blackmail. Karl plans the mine as a legacy for his teen son Tim, who hears all and steal the rangers' search map to go look for the lease alone, but gets into major trouble, which Joans saves him from.
Loose tethers on hiking trails, willfully destroyed signposts in the national park. Jonas suspects saboteurs at work who want to scare off the tourists and resort to drastic measures. Anticipating that the supposed conservationists have even more planned, he warns his team and the hiking groups to be particularly careful and attentive. In the meantime, entrepreneur Nollau has decided to focus entirely on tourism and to expand his old mountain tunnel with a climbing park. Jonas is skeptical about the plans because he doesn't trust Nollau, especially when he senses a deal. When the architect of the future climbing park falls while inspecting the rock due to a loose retaining iron and three young people flee, Jonas and Christoph give chase. Christoph can get a girl, but inexplicably lets her go. When Jonas confronts Christoph, he evades with an excuse. Maybe he's covering for someone? For Nollau it is obvious that Jonas is behind the accident to prevent his tourism plans, the conflict between the two flares up again. The situation escalates when the young conservationists riot in Nollau's mining museum and endanger the life of Jonas' nephew Lukas.
A child runs away and is missing.
There is a crisis in the love affair between national park ranger Jonas and biologist Emilia. She gets an attractive job offer from her ex-boyfriend.
While looking for poachers, Jonas comes across 17-year-old Julian in the forest, who has set up in an old log cabin with his pregnant friend Lena. The two teenagers hide there without their parents' knowledge, as they are against the relationship and the baby. Lena's mother, Carolin, is even pushing for adoption. At Jonas 'urgent request, Lena and Julian inform their parents about their whereabouts, who then exert even more pressure. When Julian learns from his father Ralf that he has to start his youth sentence because he skipped community hours, it becomes too much for the young people and they leave. On the way, Lena went into labor .
After five years in Canada, Jonas returns back to Europe and takes up a job as a park ranger in a stunningly beautiful sandstone national park full of rocky canyons and lush forests. Jonas' duties are manifold: taking care of visitors and nature alike but also those of law enforcement, firefighting and mountain rescue. It's never too long until he has to prove his many practical talents, empathy and dedication - either within his professional life or in his interactions with family, friends and colleagues. Only his love life is lacking direction. That is something he shares with his colleague, the beautiful biologist Emilia, who values her freedom as much as Jonas does. It might just be their shared interest in the protecting nature will bring them closer together.
