Voices of Liberation is a 11-part documentary series about the Allied liberation of Europe during World War II.
Operation Overlord was a day late due to atrocious weather. It began on the 6th of June 1944. During the night, thousands of paratroopers landed on both sides of the projected bridgehead during the dangerous airborne assault. At dawn, thousands of transports ships and boats began landing the troops on the shore. At certain points, the German resistance was fierce.
The Battle of Normandy began on the 7th of June and the fighting between the large hedgerows lasted nearly 80 days. Finally, the breakthrough at Avranches leads to the exploitation, and the liberation of Alençon, being the first French city liberated by French troops.
From the moment the Allied soldiers had crossed the Seine, the road to Paris was opened. But it was the Parisians who would take the initiative in its liberation by triggering a general strike. The arrival of the 2nd Armored Division on the 24th of August and General de Gaulle the following day, marked a highly symbolic turning point in the liberation of France.
Having mauled German armies in Normandy and liberated Paris, the Allies began their pursuit after the retreating Germans. Soon they overran the Belgian border at Tournai on the 2nd of September. The following days, the liberation of Brussels and Antwerp began. Immediately, the payback against suspected collaborators started. Over 80.000 citizens were arrested just after the liberation.
