At Royal Papworth, 54-year-old Shelley undergoes one of the most complex and extraordinary operations imaginable - a pulmonary endarterectomy. At Addenbrooke's, a new procedure has been devised to help cancer patients with weakened bones.
This edition focuses on marathon operations. At Royal Papworth, 59-year-old Kevin is having a chest wall reconstruction that will take at least 12 hours. At Addenbrooke's, 47-year-old Gulraiz is having a rare brain tumour removed.
Surgeons at Royal Papworth perform a double lung transplant for a patient with a genetic disorder that's destroying the air sacs in his lungs. At Addenbrooke's, a cavernoma is removed from near the top of a patient's spinal cord.
The 3rd series concludes with operations at neighbouring Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in which surgeons have to balance the risks of the procedure against the risks of not treating their patients' conditions.
Cameras follow surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre staff and patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham's surgical unit, where surgeons push medical boundaries to the limit.
