When the Gunderson boys - Brandon, Gary and Robby - hire Ron Snuffkin to pretend to be their father after their real father goes to prison, they find out that there's more to their "fake" dad than meets the eye. Ron has to enroll them in school, convince Robby's teacher to keep him in her class, sweet-talk the principal, locate mint-condition toy soldiers at his grandmother's house and avoid a thug who wants his money.
Ron convinces his old buddy Glenn to stage a burglary in order to scare the boys, and get himself out of the storage shed and into the house.
Ron sets up a sleepover for a nerd with the boys so that he can get a "Golden Ticket" from the boy's police officer father.
Ron and the boys try to make the house presentable and create family photos when Robby's teacher comes to pay a visit.
Ron comes to the boys' aid when they all get Chicken Pox, mistakenly believing that he already had Chicken Pox when he was a kid.
Three young brothers hire a charming, wayward schemer to stand in as their father when their real one goes to prison.
