A lesbian journalist Allie wants to write a story about transgender people. To do some research for the story, she approaches a transgender waitress Violet. Violets turns down the request claiming that she is not an activist.
Violet tells Allie about her life. Later Allie meets with her friends and discovers that some of them have quite extreme opinions regarding transgender people.
Paige goes on a date, which she spends wondering whether to tell the man that she is transgender. Violet talks with Allie while walking her home.
Violet's evening with Allie is interrupted when her boyfriend Mark comes home early. Allie's friend Lisa continues to express her dislike for transgender people. Paige meets with James for another date.
Violet goes clubbing with Allie, which leads to a violent confrontation with Mark. When Allie comes to see if she is all right, Violet reveals her past to her.
