In 80s Billingham, Ann Ming is distraught when her 22-year-old daughter Julie vanishes from her home. The police suggest Julie must be in London to reunite with her estranged husband, but Ann knows Julie would never leave her son behind.
Haunted by nightmares of her daughter's death, Ann channels her grief into pushing the police for answers while trying to save her marriage. When the jury fails to reach a verdict, the judge calls a retrial and Ann must relive the ordeal.
Ann and Charlie try to rebuild their life together as a shock confession sees Ann launch a campaign that is thwarted by an 800-year-old law.
Ann takes on the British justice system in an attempt to repeal the double jeopardy law in a bid to finally see justice for her daughter Julie.
Julie disappeared in 1990 and her body was found 80 days later. The killer was acquitted twice due to mistrials but later admitted to the murder. However, the double jeopardy law prevented a retrial ensuring justice for Julie.
