The year is 1982. Bent Ruhof Olsen moves from Aars to the big city of Aarhus to study engineering. He moves into a dormitory, where he meets some of the people who will turn his life upside down. With him, Bent has his parents' parting gift - a sparkling new video camera. And there's plenty to film in a world that is both captivating and terrifying.
The years are 1982-83. Bent has set himself a new goal - he wants a girlfriend. He is tempted by the unattainable Ulla Karin, but it is the nursing student Helle who teaches him what "scrotum" means. He also meets the cheerful Lene Fisker, who spreads good spirits in the dormitory hallway. On the other hand, the mood is almost zero when Bent returns home to Aars at Christmas time.
The year is 1984. Things are not just going wrong in Bent's relationship, but also in the relationships of the time. That's why Bent can make a living as a private detective specializing in infidelity. A practical joke leads to a long-awaited showdown between Bent and his domineering mother.
The year is 1985. Bent, Helle and the other friends from the dormitory go on holiday to Spain, where they experience total freedom. Together with Lene Fisker, Benjamin discovers a joyful side of life, and Ulla Karin indulges in Spanish delicacies. The idyll comes to an abrupt end when Bent gets a call from home.
