A 21-year-old man is found dead from stab wounds, in a place where prostitutes picked up customers. He worked for his 15-year-old girlfriend's parents, who run a dry cleaners. They knew nothing about the relationship.
A young girl is struck and killed by a truck on a country road outside Lübeck at night. Initial investigations at the scene reveal that 16-year-old Jasmin fled from a wooded area onto the road to escape an attacker. Her brother Benni is certain: Jasmin ran away from Armin Lange, with whom he had gotten into a heated argument over Jasmin just hours earlier. However, Kiesewetter and Englen do not believe Armin's guilt has been proven. Armin was recently released from a psychiatric hospital and has since been living on Sarah Lehmann's farm. Sarah, too, is convinced of Armin's innocence because her lodger cares so lovingly for her eight-year-old son Tobi - in stark contrast to her jealous, violent boyfriend Bernd. When a lynch mob forms in the neighborhood under Benni's leadership, the situation threatens to escalate.
