Inspiring contestants, including the show's first celebrity player, Ruben Studdard, an uplifting "second chances" theme and powerful new roles for the trainers highlight Season 15.
A roll of the die determines whose weight will count at the weigh-in.
The first eliminated contestant, Fernanda, provides an update of her weight loss journey at home. The teams, all with the same amount of resources, learn that their workout this week will be determined by an auction of gym equipment, each piece which is available to the entire team if they have the highest bid. Strategy is to make other teams pay as a high a price as possible for the equipment that they want, while paying as little as possible for what one's own team wants. It is the penultimate item on the auction block that has the potential to be good or bad: a mystery box. Bob takes aside Matt to talk about postponing his marriage plans to be on the ranch, which may either help or hinder him in his weight loss. If he is sent home early, the experience may scar him in that journey. As such, Matt becomes Bob's project for the week. Dolvett's target is Tanya, who he feels has not lived up to her potential. He tries to discover why. All the trainers feel the contestants as a collective just aren't mentally invested in their journey this week, and so decide to provide them with a gift to get them over what is hopefully a short term hump. This week's weigh-in again has a red line, meaning that someone will automatically be sent home unless a trainer save is used.
Tanya feels extra pressure on herself this week as Dolvett used his one and only trainer save of the season at the last weigh-in to keep her on the ranch. The fourteen remaining contestants compete in their first temptation challenge - a Halloween themed one - the winning team which will receive immunity at the next weigh-in as long as none on that team gains any weight. In a patch of one hundred pumpkins, the contestants, one by one by team, have to choose a pumpkin, one which contains the immunity ticket. The other ninety-nine pumpkins contain either a cash prize which the individual keeps, or a Halloween treat. If the contestant chooses not to eat the treat, their team sits out the remainder of the challenge. One team does receive that immunity, which places pressure on the two losing teams. This week, Dolvett's red team seems as a collective to be falling victim to light-headedness during their workouts. Jillian worries about two of her team members, namely Jay whose hip is not feeling good, and Tumi, who doesn't seem to have any aggression in the way she works out. And Bob focuses his attention on motivating Holley, which he hopes will spark his other team members as well. All the contestants receive gifts, which may help them out emotionally. At the weigh-in, the team(s) without saves or immunity worry about the red line.
Ruben's elimination at the latest weigh-in, he who was seen as the heart of the ranch, brings the reality of the competition side of the equation into focus for the remaining contestants, and not just his red team mates. Dolvett brings his team to work out with the Beat Cancer Bootcamp. This experience motivates the team, but has the greatest emotional impact on David, whose first wife died from cancer. Jillian takes her team's workout into the pool, where she helps Craig overcome his fear of water, that fear the result of not knowing how to swim. Bob knows that the target is squarely on the blue team's back, as the only team that still has its full complement of members and that still has its trainer save. The week's reward challenge goes into the kitchen, where Sam Kass, White House Senior Policy of Nutrition, and last year's child ambassadors judge a food competition, the winning team, who has prepared the combination healthiest and tastiest dish, will win a year's supply of produce. This challenge hits home especially for Jennifer, whose lifestyle has led both to her and her daughter being overweight. Just before the weigh-in, Alison drops a bombshell of news which affects all the competitors regarding this weigh-in.
Contestants transform mentally and physically as they compete to lose weight and win a cash prize.
