Mildred returns to Ms. Cackle's academy with the hopes of a better year; but when her summer holiday project is stolen she has to prove she didn't make it up. Meanwhile, a group of first years discover a secret in a tree. Plus a discovery in the school's ruins spells hope and trouble for everyone.
Tired of their constant bickering, Ms. Cackle places a friendship trap on Mildred and Ethel. As the girls must solve the trap, Izzy and the rest of the first years must solve another problem of their own. Plus the arrival of a new teacher ruffles Ms. Hardbrooms feathers.
In order to show she's still the best; Ethel Conjures up a cloning potion only to have a playful version of herself come out and stir trouble. Meanwhile, the arrival of the school's magical counsel head has Ms. Cackle and Hardbroom scrambling to find the Foundation stone.
When a young wizard wants to learn chanting, Mildred and her friends sneak him in to meet a famous Chanter at the school. But there's one small hiccup. He's the grandson of the High Wizard. Meanwhile, the first years try to banish a problem, only to create a new one.
A lesson on family trees gets Mildred thinking about finding her dad. Ethel can't resist making a cruel joke at Mildred's expense. Sports Day pushes Maud to take desperate measures.
Mildred lives an ordinary life until the day that Maud Spellbody crashes her broomstick into their balcony. Maud then introduces Mildred to Cackle's Academy--a school for young witches set high on a mountaintop.
