Ghent, 2018. Twelve citizens with different backgrounds are plucked from their daily lives. They come together to make up the jury for the "Millennium Trial", a controversial assize case.
In court, the retired cop Donald Vantomme is questioned. He conducted the Brechtje Vindevogel murder investigation between 2000 and 2016, but was taken off the case because he was getting nowhere.
FJP Commissioner Eliane Pascual methodically explains to the court how the police has been able to catch Fri Palmers for both crimes after eighteen years.
Marc Vindevogel, father of the victim, is now the first to testify for the public prosecutor. He confesses that he never believed Fri to be guilty.
Stefaan is becoming a main witness in the trial. His ex-girlfriend Brechtje disappeared in 2000 and was found dead. His daughter Roos died fourteen years later.
