Chad & Cheryl: First up was Chad Ochocinco, who talked about how his only dance experience is in the end zone after scoring touchdowns. He took rehearsals seriously and told Cheryl not to tell him he's done good unless it was really true. They danced the cha cha cha. Head judge Len Goodman (who was wearing a hat) took it off to Chad, saying he was "a rough diamond" and could use a little polish. He said it was a "great start to the show." Bruno Tonioli said Chad had huge talent, but agreed that he had to sharpen his skills and "I can't wait to see you again." Carrie Ann Inaba agreed there was "some raw somethin' happening" that will take him far. She, too, said she wanted to see more. Scores: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18.
Shannen & Mark: Shannen said she was doing the show for her dad, who had a massive stroke and loves the show. She said that being judges terrified her and said she'd get hives if she got too nervous. Mark said he had to keep antihistamine ready. They danced the Viennese waltz. She received a standing ovation and her dad cheered from next to the dance floor. Bruno said it was a very difficult piece of choreography for the first show. He said it was very difficult and said she swung her arms around like a primate, but he was trying to praise her, overall. Shannen teared up when they showed her dad in the crowd. Carrie Ann agreed that it was a rough start, but it got better and she saw something in her performance. Len said that Shannen, overall, did a good job and was graceful in her performance. Scores: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18.
Erin & Maks: Erin said her greatest fear was not being as good as she wanted to be on the show. When they first met, she told Maks that she'd asked for Tony. In rehearsal, she kept stopping herself for fear of having done the wrong steps, which annoyed Maks. They danced the cha cha cha. Carrie Ann said Erin had good moves, but she had to work on her arms and she wasn't hitting her lines sharp enough. Len called her a "funky monkey." He said it was another challenging routine, but said it was really good, overall. Bruno said he liked what he saw and said she did a good job placing her foot down on the beat. He said it was a "wonderful" debut. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21.
Jake & Chelsie: Jake presented Chelsie with a rose upon their first meeting, and she assured him they wouldn't be getting married at the end of the show. Jake got nervous in rehearsal because he just wasn't a good dancer. He said he went to practice and felt dumb every day because he kept messing up. Chelsie told him the competition is about improvement, not being great from the start, and off they went. They did a Viennese waltz to Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" (get it?). Len said he liked what he saw, even though there were "a couple of little incidents." Bruno told Jake to bring it down a notch, but that it was good. Carrie Ann said she was "really impressed." Scores: 7, 6, and 7. Total: 20
Niecy & Louis: Niecy said she was kicked out of a dance performance as an eighth grader and she never went back to dancing -- until now. Niecy told Louis in rehearsal that she likes her "jiggly parts," and she wanted to keep them. They danced the cha cha cha. The crowd cheered and Niecy got a bit emotional. Bruno said Niecy had to focus her performance a bit more, because it went in and out of character a few times. Carrie Ann said it was really nice and she liked Niecy's energy and how she added her personality. Len agreed, saying it was "clean, clear and precise." But he said the whole thing was a bit uneventful. Scores: 7, 5, and 6. Total: 18.
Evan & Anna: The gold medalist was setting out to prove people wrong after years of being told that his figure skating is too technical and that his performance showed no dance ability. In rehearsals, spinning in a different direction than he does on the ice was tripping him up. They danced a Viennese waltz. Carrie Ann cheered along with the crowd and said Evan was good, but still had a few things to work on. She reminded him to point his toes and to make a connection with the audience. Len said Evan had "great artistry" and musicality, but he had clumsy feet. He also said Evan and Anna needed better chemistry. Bruno said Evan moved with the grace of a swan and said it was "wonderful." Scores: 8, 7, and 8. Total: 23
Buzz & Ashly: More than four decades after walking on the moon, Buzz took to the "Dancing with the Stars" floor. Ashly Costa returned to the show for the first time since Season 3. At 80 years old, Buzz and his partner were more worried about him remembering their steps than learning them in the first place. Len recalled watching Buzz watch on the moon and how brave he thought Buzz was then and now. But Len said he couldn't give marks for bravery. Bruno said it looked like Buzz still had his moon boots on. Carrie Ann pointed out that Buzz inspired a ton of people with his performance. Scores: 5, 4, and 5. Total: 14.
Nicole & Derek: Nicole said she secretly prayed for Derek to be her partner, and he showed up. They had a lot of fun in rehearsal and Derek helped Nicole get over the fact that not every aspect of the Viennese waltz looked hot. Nicole vowed that after they danced, they'd be known as Sir Derek and Lady Nicole. Bruno jumped out of his chair and called it "a performance of startling finesse" and said he was "astounded." Carrie Ann said "the bar has just been set for Season 10." She said it was emotional and passionate and said she hasn't seen a routine like that out of the gate like that -- ever. Len said it looked nice, but looking beyond the choreography it wasn't great. He ripped apart the footwork and more as the crowd booed. Scores: 9, 7, and 9. Total: 25
Aiden & Edyta: Aiden said he liked taking risks, doing things like jumping out of airplanes. Edyta was blown away by his good looks and practice was more physically demanding than he expected it to be. They danced a steamy cha cha cha. Tom said they were "one gust away from an FCC fine" with Edyta's outfit. Carrie Ann said she liked the gusto, but it was disjointed and "didn't go anywhere" for her. Len said there was a dancer in Aiden, but the routine was full of everything he doesn't like. Bruno said there was nothing going on and said Aiden was "like Kenny Mayne all over again." Scores: 5, 5, and 5. Total: 15
Kate & Tony: Kate said that when she told her kids she was going to do the show, they told her she can't dance. She wanted to prove them wrong. She said that several times each day in practice, she's stopped and wondered what she's done. Tony said he was questioning whether she really wanted to be there. They danced the Viennese waltz. Len said the first dance is like a first date, and Kate's nerves got the best of her. Bruno said it must have been a whole new world for her and she had to learn how to perform. He said "it looked like Tony was pushing a shopping cart around the floor" as he explained that she had to assume a character. Carrie Ann noted that all aspects of the performance were new to Kate, and she enjoyed the vulnerability and honesty in the performance. Scores: 6, 5, and 5. Total: 16.
Pam & Damian: Pam said she did the show for her Auntie Vie, who loves to dance. She was paired with new pro Damian Whitewood and they decided they had a lot to prove. Pam said she had no rhythm and was tone deaf, but loves music. They danced a fiery cha cha cha. Bruno said he could "only think of sex, sex and more sex." Carrie Ann said she had waited the most to see Pam, and she did not disappoint. She said Pam was fully engaged and it was "a little much." Len said the cast had been brilliant. He said that it was "a mess" overall. She went wrong and off time. Scores: 7, 6, and 8. Total: 21.
The dancers return for a second round of performances on Monday night, followed by the first results show.

The final of the "Big Dance" was happening on another network, but "Dancing with the Stars" was just getting started. After a surprising elimination in which Shannen Doherty was 9021-out, head judge Len Goodman laid out a challenge last week to all the dancers to come up with a performance that would tell a story, but without props or gimmicks. How would they respond? Monday it was time to find out.
The pros demonstrated the waltz, paso doble and quickstep in a performance meant to convey a story of "a tempestuous relationship that ends in true love."
Evan & Anna: Figure skating champ Evan Lysacek found himself near the top of the leader board last week. He and partner Anna Trebunskaya worked on a story of a husband and wife who are at odds because the wife is late to arrive for their quickstep. Len loved the story and said it cheered him up. Bruno Tonioli said Evan gave Anna "the ride of her life." Carrie Ann Inaba called it "great," and said it had all the right parts. Evan told Brook Burke afterward about "a couple broken toes" he had, but he pushed through. Scores: 9, 8, and 9. Total: 26.
Buzz & Ashly: Astronaut Buzz Aldrin was looking to rebound from low judges' scores, even though his fans pulled him through. His partner Ashly Costa gave him a story of him playing a man coming home from the war and she was his daughter. They danced a waltz. Bruno said it was more like the return of the king, but said Buzz's movement "didn't really go anywhere." Carrie Ann said that in the week about storytelling, she enjoyed the story and wanted to know more. Len said it had an "innocent charm" that he liked, but the technique was poor, the routine was over-simplified and there wasn't much performance. Scores: 5, 4, and 4. Total: 13.
Jake & Chelsie: "Bachelor" star Jake Pavelka was in the middle of the pack last week, but the judges could feel his determination. Jake got upset in rehearsal because he said Chelsie was talking to him in a "disrespectful" way. They did a quickstep in which Jake was an explorer who found Cleopatra (Chelsie) in her tomb, and they danced. Carrie Ann thought it was nice storytelling, but that it kept in line with the quickstep. Len said Jake's legs were messed up, but called the dance "great entertainment." Bruno agreed with Len that Jake at times lost his steps, but he enjoyed the performance. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21.
Niecy & Louis: Comedian Niecy Nash got on Len's good side last week with her second performance. They took on a story of being an interracial couple in the 1960s, when such a love would have been forbidden. Niecy cried when she thought about it, and her partner Louis Van Amstel asked her to help him fight his battle, too. She said she hoped America would see the story. Len said it was brave to attempt the story with no props, and he saw all the emotion. He told Louis to work with Niecy on better technique. Bruno said they acted their tale of love very well, but there was a stumble at the beginning and Niecy had to work on her feet. Carrie Ann said it was an important story to tell, but she didn't understand the ending. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21.
Chad & Cheryl: NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco did alright in his first performance, but tripped up in his second dance. He and partner Cheryl Burke were focused on bouncing back and refocusing. Cheryl told Chad their paso doble would be about him trying to seduce her despite her rejections. He said art was imitating life. Bruno said the power and presence were back for Chad, but at times he still veers off course. Carrie Ann said Chad used the energy of "wanting the girl" to his advantage. Len enjoyed Chad's determination, but told him to work on his posture. Scores: 7, 6, and 7. Total: 20.
Pamela & Damian: Pamela Anderson admitted she didn't worry much about the voting, but after finishing in the bottom two she was going to take it more seriously. Pam, an animal rights activist, incorporated some of her beliefs into her routine, and she got some tips on the performance from Charo. Carrie Ann said she got the story that Pam didn't like the bullfighter, but she threw herself off a few times. Len said Pam had an intensity about her, but needed refinement in the dance. Bruno said that under the sexpot surface, there is a good performer in Pamela. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21
Aiden & Edyta: Soap star Aiden Turner threw up after last week's performance, and was hoping things would go a little more smoothly this time around. His family, including his wife and 7-month-old daughter, came to visit on his birthday, and he said it made his quickstep a little quicker. Len said the quickstep was a little careful and said he'd like to see Aiden just go for it. Bruno thought Aiden looked happier than he did last week. Carrie Ann agreed that she saw some improvement in Aiden, but he was a little too light on his feet. Scores: 7, 6, and 7. Total: 20.
Erin & Maks: ESPN host Erin Andrews, who's had some issues this week with e-mail death threats surfacing and has had bouts with the paparazzi and a man who videotaped her nude through a peephole in a hotel room, turned over all her trust and faith into her partner Maks by dancing most of the performance blindfolded. Bruno said her dancing in hold was fantastic, but when they danced side by side she lost it a bit. Carrie Ann said the prop added dimension and a sense of danger. She called it "breath-takingly artistic." Len said the dance had the most boring start he'd ever seen. He said the waltz they did was good, but there wasn't enough of it. Scores: 8, 7, and 8. Total: 23.
Kate & Tony: TLC star Kate Gosselin apparently believed she's had bigger issues with cameras and the paparazzi, so she did a dance about her trials with photographers. Her partner Tony Dovolani brought in an acting coach to help Kate get outside of herself. Kate said her icy exterior was because she's had a hard year and was protecting herself. They danced a paso doble. Carrie Ann called it "odd," and "hard to watch." She said she didn't feel like the emotion got to Kate's face. Len it was "too pedestrian." Bruno said she did play a character, but it didn't translate into movement and she looked like she was walking. Scores: 5, 5, and 5. Total: 15
Nicole & Derek: Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger landed the first two 10s of the season last week and was nervous about how to top it. She and partner Derek Hough came up with a quickstep in which they played sailors who take a break from mopping the deck to dance. Len said it was beautifully danced, but it was "just a load of Vaudeville." Bruno said it was like seeing Anne Meara and Gene Kelly back in Hollywood after 50 years, but Len was right about breaking too many rules with it. Carrie Ann also called out a lift and broken holds, then said, "but when you guys take that act on the road, I want a front row seat." Scores: 8, 6, and 9. Total: 23
LEADER BOARD:
Evan & Anna: 26
Erin & Maks: 23
Nicole & Derek: 23
Jake & Chelsie: 21
Niecy & Louis: 21
Pamela & Damian: 21
Chad & Cheryl: 20
Aiden & Edyta: 20
Kate & Tony: 15
Buzz & Ashly: 13
Host Tom Bergeron and co-host Brooke Burke weren't in the mood to drag things out much, getting to the first of the results immediately on Tuesday's "Dancing with the Stars" results show.
The first two couples safe for another week were Aiden & Edyta and Erin & Maks.
Len recapped the previous night's performances, saying Jake and Niecy both needed to step up a bit to compete. Niecy said she was taken aback at the start of her performance. Len said Pam's dance was intense, but "not neat." Len said there was a slight improvement in Chad's dance, but the same couldn't be said for Aiden. He said Aiden was unable to move because he's too preoccupied with taking in information about the dances he's trying to learn.
Len was still upset that Derek and Nicole broke all the quickstep rules, and Nicole said afterward that it was all Derek's fault (she was joking, of course). Kate claimed she was proud of herself, despite getting crushed by the judges. Len still didn't like Buzz's dancing, despite loving the story. He enjoyed Erin's waltz, but said he should've given her a 6 instead of a 7 because there wasn't enough waltz content. Len loved Evan's quickstep.
Play it again...: Len asked for an encore performance from Evan and Anna, who did their quickstep once more.
Be our guest: Country singer Reba McEntyre paid a visit to perform her single, "I Want a Cowboy." A bit later, Reba came back to perform "Consider Me Gone."
Back to the results: The next couple safe for another week was Niecy & Louis. Nicole & Derek were the next to hear they were safe.
After a feature from Melissa Rycroft on what it's like to be in the audience, we found out that Evan & Anna were safe, along with Chad & Cheryl.
Backstage, Chad made a little quip about "making love on the dance floor" when he does the rumba with Cheryl next week.
Later, Tom announced that the next couple who were safe for another week was Pamela & Damian. That left Jake & Chelsie, Buzz & Ashly, and Kate & Tony.
The first couple in the bottom two was Buzz & Ashly. Also in the bottom two was Jake & Chelsie. That meant Kate & Tony were safe for another week.
Len said he was surprised and a bit disappointed. He thought the voters would save Buzz. He also thought Jake did a good job, but apparently the viewers didn't agree.
Tom announced, "On the third week of competition, the couple with the lowest overall combined total and therefore leaving right now is ... Buzz & Ashly."
The crowd grumbled a bit, but the reaction quickly turned to a standing ovation for the American legend. Buzz said he did the show for the fighter pilots, military people and "elder geezers like me" who wanted to see someone his age take on such a challenge.
U.S. reality show based on the British series "Strictly Come Dancing," where celebrities partner up with professional dancers and compete against each other in weekly elimination rounds to determine a winner.
