Back in China of 30s, Shang Xirui was a famous Peking Opera actor from Shandong who was performing in Peiping. He refused to show his good face to Jiang Rongshou who was the local villain and also his Shidaye. Cheng Fengtai was a patriotic businessman who was influential in Peiping. His proposal of helping defeat Japanese invaders damaged the interest of the chamber of commerce in Peiping a lot so the president of the chamber Zheng Yuanmu decided to make him a friend so the chamber could use Cheng's trade route to make more money. He invited Cheng to go to the opera with him and it was Shang who was the performer. Shang changed the libretto of the play while performing and that made the audience angry.
Cheng fought with those chaos makers and got hurt. Shang was grateful and lent his coat to Cheng. No long later, Shang was invited to a banquet to perform and Cheng was one of the attendees. They chatted and became good friends. At the meantime, the truth of the mess during Shang's performance was found out that it was Jiang Dengbao who was Jiang Rongshou's son ordered those people to do so for paying back. Later on, Shang got invited to perform at Minister Jin's donation ceremony. He refused to work with a musician who has drunk wine. Jiang Rongshou offered Shang a deal so he wouldn't ruin the ceremony but got refused. The latter seemed to be confident about the whole thing.
