Yeon nears her tenth birthday as Goo San Daek fears the girl will transform into a Gumiho. Mother and daughter leave their village but they are held for questioning by the authorities.
Yoon Doo Soo does not reveal the reasons for his idea to adopt Yeon. Goo San Daek wants to use fox marble to heal Cho Ok but she is concerned about its influence on the child.
Goo San Daek chooses to hide Yeon from Yoon Doo Soo. Cho Ok's mother wants a doctor to visit her daughter but there are concerns that the treatment will be useless.

The legendary gumiho or nine-tailed fox, Goo San Daek, leaves her husband after his betrayal renders her unable to shape shift. She takes her nine-year-old daughter, Yeon Yi, who has yet to gain the ability to use her gumiho powers, to a village in order to protect her. As Yeon Yi turns ten, her physical transformation begins, putting her in increasing danger of being discovered by her neighbors.
